Medical Optics

Avantier is a premium manufacturer of high-quality medical optics. Not only does Avantier inc. produce a wide variety of advanced medical optics for both medical research and practice, but we also work with our customers to design custom components or optical devices upon request.

What is Medical Optics?

Medical optics involves using light, in any of its many forms, for investigational imaging in medical applications. Light can be used to detect the presence of COVID in a sputum sample, or to complete a computer-guided laser refractive surgery. Techniques such as Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) and Fluorescence Imaging have revolutionized the field. Photoacoustic Imaging and Diffuse Optical Tomography (DOT) are newer methods providing detailed insights into tissue structures and functions. Raman Spectroscopy allows for molecular-level analysis, while Multiphoton Microscopy enables deep tissue imaging with minimal damage. Bioluminescence Imaging offers a way to visualize biological processes, and Endoscopic Optical Imaging provides a minimally invasive approach to internal examinations. Medical imaging technology and imaging techniques have seen major advances in recent years, allowing us to use light to achieve what we could only have dreamed of twenty years ago.

Manufacturing of Optics for Medical Devices & Systems

Manufacturing optics for medical devices is different from manufacturing optics in other fields. There can be no compromises on quality, as a person’s life may depend on precision optics working as intended within a treatment or diagnostic protocol. Tight standards govern the production of optics for the medical industry to ensure that nothing subpar is included in an optical assembly. At first glance, this might appear to grant carte blanche to produce the finest, most expensive optics. However, medical optics is also constrained by inflexible budgetary and time constraints, and an effective medical optics design will take into account all three factors to produce high-performance optics at a competitive price and with a quick turnaround time.

Examples of Medical Optics

At Avantier, we know what it means to create medical optics to the highest standards while working within our clients’ time and budget constraints. We are proud to have designed and manufactured a wide variety of optical devices for both medical research and clinical applications. Here we’ll look at one area, ophthalmology and consumer eye health where medical optics have transformed medical practice.

  • Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is a noninvasive diagnostic technique in which an ophthalmologist uses light waves to create a cross-sectional image of the retina. Layers can be mapped and their thickness determined, enabling a medical practitioner to decide on the appropriate treatment of macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease, and a variety of other conditions.
  • Fluorescence Imaging involves the use of fluorescent dyes or proteins that emit light upon excitation, helping in identifying cancer cells, tracking the distribution of drugs, and visualizing optical components in biological processes in real-time.
  • Photoacoustic Imaging combines laser-induced ultrasound waves with optical imaging to image blood vessels, detect tumors, and monitor oxygen saturation in tissues.
  • Diffuse Optical Tomography (DOT) utilizes near-infrared light to probe tissue absorption and scattering properties, finding applications in functional brain imaging, breast cancer detection, and monitoring tissue oxygenation.
  • Raman Spectroscopy exploits Raman scattering to provide molecular fingerprints of tissues, making it useful in identifying biochemical changes, diagnosing cancers, and detecting pathogens.
  • Multiphoton Microscopy uses multiple low-energy photons to excite fluorescent molecules, enabling deep tissue imaging with minimal photodamage, and is used in neuroscience, studying live tissues, and cellular dynamics.
  • Bioluminescence Imaging relies on light emitted by bioluminescent organisms or chemical reactions and is applied in preclinical research to study gene expression, infection pathways, and tumor growth.
  • Endoscopic Optical Imaging uses miniature cameras and light sources in endoscopes for internal body imaging, applied in gastroenterology (e.g., colonoscopy), respiratory tract examination, and minimally invasive surgeries.

Micro Optics for Medical Devices & Systems

These micro devices offer minimally invasive treatment options that were unimaginable only a few years ago. Micro-optics are vital in diagnostic medical imaging, with tiny lenses often measuring just a few millimeters in diameter.

Manufacturing these micro-optical devices demands meticulous design and precision techniques. Avantier exceeds every standard in the production of medical micro optics.
