No longer does a mobile phone camera contain just three to four plastic elements; today, high-end phones will contain a complex array of specialty elements with carefully chosen optical quality.

Miniature-sized optics are increasing in importance, as are optical metasurfaces (OMs) which are specialty optical components with surface layers scales that are smaller than the wavelength of light and allow unprecedented sculpting of light at the nanoscale level. Optical metasurfaces are manufactured with a combination of lithography, thin film deposition, and chemical etching.
